Japan to deploy missiles on island near Taiwan by 2031

Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi announced that Japan plans to deploy surface-to-air missiles to its remote western island of Yonaguni near Taiwan by March 2031, as regional tensions with China continue to simmer over Taiwan's status. This marks the first time Japan has specified a timeline for the missile deployment to Yonaguni island since the announcement was made in 2022. The island, which lies just 110 kilometers (68 miles) from Taiwan's shores and is visible on clear days, has become increasingly strategic as tensions in the Taiwan Strait escalate. China claims self-ruled Taiwan as its own territory and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve 'reunification.' The deployment to Yonaguni represents a significant military enhancement for Japan's southwestern defenses. The island currently hosts a Japanese Self-Defense Force (JSDF) unit of approximately 160 personnel focused on coastal surveillance. By 2031, it will be equipped with medium-range surface-to-air missiles capable of intercepting incoming aircraft and missiles, significantly bolstering Japan's defensive capabilities in the region. The Japanese defense minister noted that while the current plan is for fiscal year 2030, the timing 'may change depending on the progress of future facility improvements.' This announcement comes amid already strained relations between Tokyo and Beijing, which have reached their lowest point in years since Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested in November that Japan would activate its self-defense forces in response to an attack on Taiwan. China has responded to these tensions through various means, including sending warships near Japanese waters, restricting rare earth exports, limiting Chinese tourism to Japan, canceling cultural exchanges, and even reclaiming pandas gifted to Japanese zoos. The worry among regional analysts is that any conflict over Taiwan could draw in the United States, a key ally to Taiwan, potentially escalating into a broader military confrontation involving multiple regional powers.
