American Airlines makes bag fees even more expensive for basic economy tickets

American Airlines announced on Thursday that it is raising its checked baggage fees, with a particularly steep increase for passengers holding basic economy tickets, as the airline industry contends with soaring jet fuel costs driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The move aligns the carrier with competitors like Delta, United, Southwest, and JetBlue, which have all implemented similar fee hikes in recent weeks. The new fee structure takes effect immediately for tickets booked from Thursday onward. For most standard domestic and short-haul international tickets, the fee for a first checked bag at the airport will increase by $10 to $50, with a second bag costing $60. A $5 discount is available for passengers who prepay for bags via the airline's website or app. However, the increase is more pronounced for basic economy passengers, who will face a first-bag fee of $55 and a second-bag fee of $65 for tickets purchased from May 18, with the same online discount applying. Furthermore, starting May 18, all basic economy passengers, including those with elite status, will be required to pay for seat selection and will be ineligible for complimentary upgrades. The primary driver behind this industry-wide trend is a significant jump in jet fuel prices, which represents the second-largest operational cost for airlines after labor. The conflict in the Middle East has effectively choked off supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, creating a shortage of crude oil and refined products like jet fuel. While airline executives note that travel demand remains robust, there is uncertainty over whether carriers can fully absorb these increased fuel costs without passing them on to consumers. This pricing strategy also reflects a broader shift in the industry's business model, where airlines are increasingly differentiating their service tiers by making basic economy fares more restrictive while simultaneously investing in and promoting premium offerings to capture higher-margin customers.
