Bio lab found in Las Vegas is similar to California scene, officials say

Officials in Reedley, California, expressed frustration with the federal response after a bio lab discovered in Las Vegas over the weekend bore striking similarities to one found in their jurisdiction in late 2023. The California lab, located in a residential home, contained pathogen-labeled containers with dangerous substances such as dengue fever, HIV, and malaria, along with approximately 1,000 mice believed to be used as test subjects. The discovery in Las Vegas involved multiple refrigerators, freezers, and laboratory equipment, as well as numerous bottles and jugs with unknown liquid substances, all found in a locked garage. The similarities between the two labs have raised concerns about the potential for additional such facilities operating undetected across the country. Authorities in California had previously attempted to alert federal agencies to the possibility of similar labs following the 2023 discovery. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department sheriff, Kevin McMahill, noted that the items found in the Las Vegas lab were consistent in appearance with those discovered in the Reedley investigation. The California lab's operator, Jia Bei Zhu, a Chinese citizen, was arrested in October 2023 and indicted in November for distributing adulterated and misbranded medical items, including coronavirus tests. Zhu remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in April. The discovery of these labs has sparked discussions about the need for enhanced surveillance and coordination between local and federal authorities to prevent the proliferation of illegal bio labs.
