Discord, the popular communication platform for gamers with over 200 million active users, is postponing its controversial age verification policy globally to the second half of 2026 after receiving swift backlash from privacy-concerned users, as announced by Chief Technology Officer and co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy in a Tuesday blog post. The company originally planned to implement an age verification system in March that would require face scanning or ID uploads for users whose ages couldn't be determined automatically, a policy that drew immediate criticism particularly following a recent security breach of a third-party provider that exposed government ID photos of up to 70,000 Discord users. In his blog post, Vishnevskiy acknowledged that the company 'missed the mark' and addressed user concerns that Discord was merely creating problems to justify invasive data collection methods. Discord clarified that it would continue meeting specific legal obligations for age verification but would revise its initial policy before global implementation, distancing itself from one vendor, Persona, an identity verification service that failed to meet Discord's standards for facial age estimation, which must be performed entirely on-device to keep biometric data on users' phones. The relationship with Persona became particularly controversial due to its backing by Founders Fund, which is run by Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel, whose company has faced criticism for government surveillance partnerships.
