In 2016, financier Jeffrey Epstein joined Dick Cavett's wife Martha Rogers in an effort to create a PBS documentary about the legendary talk show host, but the project was ultimately abandoned after producers at WNET conducted a background check on the controversial financier and decided against accepting his financial support, according to emails released by the Justice Department on February 28, 2026. The discussions about the documentary began during a dinner at Epstein's Manhattan home, where Cavett had been introduced to the financier through mutual friend Woody Allen. Epstein expressed interest in helping fund the project, which was envisioned as an episode of PBS's 'American Masters' series with an estimated budget of $500,000. Rogers and Cavett had maintained a social relationship with Epstein, attending several salon-style meals at his townhouse with other prominent figures including former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, magician David Blaine, and comedian Bobby Slayton. Despite Epstein's 2008 felony convictions for soliciting prostitution from a minor, the couple believed he had 'paid his dues' and was rehabilitated, partly due to his association with influential people.
