Handley, Giants' successor to Parcells, dies at 81

Former New York Giants head coach and two-time Super Bowl-winning assistant Ray Handley passed away at the age of 81 last week, according to a team announcement released late Monday. Handley, who had been living in the Gulf Coast area, died of natural causes, leaving behind a complex legacy as the man tasked with succeeding the legendary Bill Parcells during a transitional era for one of the NFL’s most storied franchises. Handley’s tenure with the Giants was defined by both his rapid ascent through the coaching ranks and the immense pressure of maintaining a championship culture. Having served as a backfield coach under Parcells from 1984 to 1990, Handley was a key architect in the offensive strategies that secured Super Bowl victories in XXI and XXV. His work with standout running backs like Ottis Anderson and Rodney Hampton earned him enough internal respect to be surprisingly selected as the 13th head coach in franchise history in 1991, bypassing more high-profile candidates like defensive coordinator Bill Belichick. His two seasons as head coach, however, were marked by significant challenges and a grueling quarterback controversy between Phil Simms and Jeff Hostetler. Handley finished his head coaching career with a 14-18 record over two seasons before being dismissed in 1992.
