Hawaii’s Kilauea erupts, blasting lava sky-high

Hawaii's Kīlauea volcano erupted on Monday, June 3, 2024, within the Halemaʻumaʻu crater at the summit of the volcano in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, sending fountains of lava soaring into the night sky. The eruption was triggered by a significant increase in seismic activity and ground deformation, prompting the US Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) to raise the volcano alert level to Warning and the aviation color code to Red. The initial phase of the eruption was characterized by vigorous lava fountaining from fissures on the crater floor, creating a lava lake and generating a visible plume of volcanic gas. The eruption marks a renewed period of activity for Kīlauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes. The HVO reported that the activity was confined entirely within the closed area of the national park, posing no immediate threat to communities or infrastructure. However, the primary hazards identified were high levels of volcanic gas, which can travel downwind, and the potential for airborne particles of volcanic glass, known as Pele's hair, to be carried by the wind. Authorities emphasized that the eruptive activity and associated hazards were being closely monitored. This event follows a pattern of intermittent summit eruptions at Kīlauea over the past several years. The volcano's last major eruption sequence occurred in 2018, which involved significant summit collapse and a destructive lower East Rift Zone lava flow that reshaped the landscape and destroyed hundreds of homes. The current eruption, while visually dramatic from within the park and via webcams, is considered a typical summit event for Kīlauea. Scientists are utilizing this opportunity to collect data to better understand the volcano's internal plumbing system and magma supply, which informs both hazard assessment and public safety protocols.
