Hong Kong Court Overturns Jimmy Lai’s Fraud Conviction, in Rare Win

Hong Kong's Court of Appeal overturned a fraud conviction against media tycoon Jimmy Lai on February 9, 2025, a rare legal victory in a case that has drawn international attention to press freedom in the city. The ruling, which came weeks after Lai's sentencing, did not shorten his imprisonment as he remains detained on other charges including conspiracy to publish seditious material through his now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper. The case stems from a broader crackdown on dissent in Hong Kong, where authorities have increasingly targeted pro-democracy voices and media outlets critical of the government. Lai's legal team welcomed the overturning of the fraud conviction while maintaining his innocence across all charges, including the sedition count for which he was previously convicted. The Apple Daily newsroom was raided twice by police in 2020 before authorities forced the newspaper to shut down, and five executives and editors who worked with Lai were arrested in 2021 and later pleaded guilty to collusion charges in the same case.
