The report, which analyzed online discourse, identified coordinated networks of accounts, some aligned with far-right ideologies, systematically spreading false and harmful narratives about London's governance, diversity, and safety to undermine public trust and polarize communities. The research, conducted by the Mayor's team, revealed sophisticated tactics used by these accounts, such as amplifying isolated incidents of crime to paint an inaccurate picture of widespread lawlessness and using manipulated media to falsely accuse city officials of corruption or incompetence. Mayor Khan emphasized that this is not merely offensive speech but a calculated strategy to erode social cohesion and democratic institutions. He argued that the platforms' algorithms, designed to maximize engagement, inadvertently promote this divisive content, creating echo chambers that make the disinformation more potent and difficult to counter with factual corrections. In response, the Mayor is calling for urgent regulatory action, urging the UK government to fully implement and strengthen the Online Safety Act to hold tech giants accountable for the content they amplify.
