Man jailed for trying to rape woman on flight to Edinburgh

Nicola Cristiano, a 52-year-old passenger, was sentenced to 21 months in prison at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday for the attempted rape and sexual assault of a woman during a late-evening flight from London Stansted to Edinburgh in October 2023. The incident occurred mid-flight when Cristiano, who had been consuming alcohol, targeted a female passenger seated in the same row, subjecting her to a terrifying ordeal as the aircraft traveled toward the Scottish capital. The prosecution detailed how the defendant’s aggressive behavior escalated from unsolicited contact to physical restraint and sexual violence. During the trial, the court heard how Cristiano repeatedly grabbed the victim by her hand and neck, using physical force to prevent her from leaving her seat or seeking help. Witnesses and cabin crew testified that the perpetrator physically restrained the woman and attempted to commit rape while the flight was airborne. The victim, who was a complete stranger to Cristiano, was left deeply traumatized by the assault, which lasted for a significant portion of the journey. Upon landing at Edinburgh Airport, Cristiano was immediately detained by Police Scotland officers who had been alerted by the flight crew. In passing the sentence, Sheriff Kenneth Campbell KC emphasized the gravity of the offense, noting that the confined environment of an aircraft made the victim particularly vulnerable and unable to escape her attacker.
