Nissan to recall about 643,000 SUVs in US over engine, gear issues, NHTSA says

Nissan announced a recall of approximately 643,000 sport utility vehicles in the United States on June 12, 2023, due to potentially dangerous engine and transmission issues identified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Japanese automaker confirmed that affected models include certain 2021-2023 Rogue and Rogue Sport SUVs, which may experience stalling or loss of power while driving, creating significant safety hazards. The recall stems from a software malfunction in the transmission control module that could cause the engine to stop unexpectedly while in motion, particularly at low speeds or during startup. Nissan stated that it will begin notifying affected owners by mail starting in late July 2023, with instructions to bring their vehicles to authorized dealers for a free software update that will resolve the issue. The NHTSA had received multiple complaints related to the problem, including reports of vehicles stalling in traffic, prompting the regulatory agency to pressure Nissan into initiating the recall.
