Opinion: A well-deserved statue for a hero rat

Cambodia is honoring the late African giant pouched rat Magawa with a bronze statue in the capital city of Phnom Penh, announced by the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) on January 10, 2025. This permanent memorial recognizes the rodent's extraordinary five-year career as a landmine detection specialist for the non-profit organization APOPO, during which he helped clear over 225,000 square meters of land by locating 71 landmines and 38 unexploded ordnance items. The statue, depicting Magawa in a miniature version of the blue APOPO vest he wore during operations, will serve as both a tribute and an educational tool. It symbolizes the innovative and life-saving work of animal detection systems in post-conflict regions. Magawa's remarkable accuracy and speed—he could search an area the size of a tennis court in 30 minutes, a task that would take a human with a metal detector four days—revolutionized mine clearance efforts in a country still plagued by millions of unexploded devices from decades of war. Magawa's legacy extends beyond his direct achievements. In 2020, he became the first rat to receive the PDSA Gold Medal, Britain's highest civilian award for animal bravery, bringing international attention to Cambodia's ongoing demining challenges. His work directly contributed to making land safe for agriculture, housing, and schools, impacting thousands of Cambodian lives. The statue initiative reflects a growing appreciation for animal contributions to humanitarian work and serves as a poignant reminder of the long-term consequences of conflict while celebrating innovative solutions to enduring problems.
