The Masters: Golf’s segregated past

The Masters Tournament, one of golf's most prestigious events held annually at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, has a deeply complicated history rooted in racial segregation, most notably through the Professional Golfers' Association of America's (PGA) former "Caucasian-only clause." This policy, which was formally part of the PGA's constitution from 1943 until 1961, explicitly barred non-white golfers from membership and participation in its sanctioned tournaments, casting a long shadow over the sport's early integration into the mainstream. The clause's existence meant that legendary Black golfers like Charlie Sifford, who would later become the first African American inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, were systematically excluded from competing in major PGA events, including The Masters, for decades. While Augusta National itself did not have an official written policy mirroring the PGA's clause, the tournament's early years were de facto segregated, with no Black competitors invited to play until Lee Elder broke the color barrier in 1975. This exclusion occurred within the broader context of the Jim Crow South, where Augusta National was founded in 1933, reflecting the pervasive racial discrimination of the era. In recent years, the tournament and the sport have publicly grappled with this legacy. The Masters and Augusta National have made symbolic strides, such as inviting Lee Elder to be an honorary starter in 2021 and establishing scholarships in his name. However, the history remains a critical part of the tournament's narrative, serving as a reminder of the systemic barriers that shaped professional golf and the ongoing journey toward diversity and inclusion in a sport that is still working to broaden its participation and audience.
