The smart lock standard that could replace your keys is finally here

Aliro, the open smart lock standard developed by major tech companies including Apple, Google, and Samsung, has officially launched its 1.0 specification in February 2026, enabling manufacturers to begin producing compatible hardware that will allow any smartphone to unlock any smart lock regardless of manufacturer. The standard aims to solve the current fragmentation in smart lock technology where digital keys typically work only with specific apps or phone manufacturers, creating a universal digital key system that works across all smartphone platforms. Aliro stores digital keys in a phone's wallet and enables tap-to-unlock functionality similar to mobile payments, with support for both Apple's iOS and Google's Android operating systems, as well as Samsung's ecosystem. The technology behind Aliro utilizes near-field communication (NFC) for tap-to-unlock functionality, Bluetooth low energy for establishing connections, and ultra-wideband (UWB) for hands-free automatic unlocking as users approach doors. Unlike many existing smart lock systems, Aliro operates as a local protocol that doesn't require cloud connectivity, proprietary apps, or Wi-Fi or cellular signals, ensuring functionality in areas with poor connectivity. The standard uses asymmetric cryptography for security and creates direct communication between devices, with the entire unlocking process controlled by Aliro to maintain security. The protocol is managed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, the same organization behind the smart home standard Matter, though Aliro focuses specifically on connecting locks to digital wallets rather than smart home platforms. While industry support for Aliro appears strong, with over 220 companies including major lock manufacturers like Assa Abloy, Allegion, and Fortune Brands involved in its development, adoption will likely require new hardware. Most existing smart locks won't be compatible with Aliro through software updates, though some manufacturers are exploring solutions like standalone NFC keypads for retrofit locks. Companies like Yale and August have confirmed they will support Aliro but only in future hardware, while Nuki has already announced an NFC-compatible keypad for its retrofit lock that will support the standard. The first Aliro-enabled locks are expected to hit the market in the coming months, with NFC tap-to-unlock likely seeing faster adoption than UWB hands-free unlocking due to broader smartphone compatibility.
