The proposed design depicts Trump with his fists on what appears to be a table or desk. The word “Liberty” span above the image of the president. The back of the coin features an image of a bald eagle that appears ready to take flight. The CFA board, which was handpicked by Trump, voted to allow the U.S. Mint to launch production on the coin. U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach debuted the coin’s design last year, which originally featured an image of the president pumping his first with the words “Fight, Fight, Fight” on the backside, in reference to the assassination attempt he survived in Butler, Pa., in 2024. Federal law has prohibited living people from being depicted on U.S. currency. But a law signed by Trump before he left office in January 2021 called the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 included new language regarding the semiquincentennial commemoration coins. The rules on the design of the coins refer specifically to the reverse of the coin, not the front, Al Jazeera reported . Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) introduced legislation last year to prohibit a president from issuing currency that displays their own likeness. Megan Sullivan, acting director of the U.S. Mint’s Office of Design Management, said Thursday that the Treasury Department secretary had the authority to authorize this coin bearing Trump’s image, The Associated Press reported. “It is my understanding that the secretary of the Treasury presented this design, as well as others, to the president and these were his selection,” Sullivan said, according to AP.
