Why is Hungary’s election so important on the international stage?

The upcoming parliamentary election in Hungary on April 3, 2022, is being closely monitored by international capitals including Washington, Moscow, Kyiv, and Brussels because its outcome will significantly influence European Union unity and the Western response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The vote represents a critical test for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has cultivated close ties with Moscow while remaining a member of the EU and NATO, creating a unique and contentious foreign policy position. Orbán's Fidesz party, which has held power since 2010, faces its most serious challenge in over a decade from a united opposition coalition. The international stakes are exceptionally high due to the war in Ukraine.
