She was 92. Born Asha Mangeshkar on Sept. 8, 1933, in Sangli, in what is now the Indian state of Maharashtra, she was the daughter of classical singer and actor Dinanath Mangeshkar. After her father’s death, the family – which included her elder sister, the singer Lata Mangeshkar – relocated to Bombay (now Mumbai), where Asha began singing professionally as a teenager. She took the surname of her first husband, Ganpatrao Bhosle, after eloping at 16.
