DHS funding lapse is now the longest government shutdown in U.S. history

The partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security funding became the longest in U.S. history when it reached its 44th day on Sunday, while the rest of the federal government remained fully operational. The ongoing funding lapse has created significant challenges for the agency, which is responsible for border security, immigration enforcement, counterterrorism efforts, and disaster response. With Congress unable to pass a funding bill specifically for the department, approximately 240,000 DHS employees have been affected, though about 185,000 of them have been deemed essential and continue working without pay.
