Fighting Wildfires Could Soon Get Harder

Climate scientist John Abatzoglou from U.C. Merced warned in new research that simultaneous wildfire emergencies across different regions worldwide could prevent countries from sharing ground crews and equipment, as climate change increasingly creates overlapping disaster scenarios that strain international cooperation. The research highlights how resource sharing has been beneficial in the past, providing flexibility and insurance when countries face fire surges they cannot manage alone. However, the changing climate pattern is creating situations where multiple nations experience severe wildfires simultaneously, leaving fewer resources available for mutual aid.
