Getlink traffic shows mixed results in March amid Easter timing effects

Getlink SE, the operator of the Channel Tunnel, reported mixed traffic results for March 2024, with the timing of the Easter holiday period creating a significant year-on-year comparison distortion. The company, which connects the UK and continental Europe, saw its Eurotunnel Shuttle services for passenger vehicles and its Eurostar high-speed rail passenger traffic decline compared to March 2023. However, its rail freight traffic through the tunnel showed a notable increase. The divergent performance is largely attributed to the calendar shift of the Easter holidays, a major travel period, which fell in March in 2023 but occurred in April in 2024. The specific figures reveal the holiday's impact. Passenger shuttle traffic for cars and other vehicles fell by 13% year-on-year to 138,483 vehicles. Similarly, Eurostar passenger numbers dropped by 8% to 732,000 travelers. In stark contrast, rail freight traffic, which is less sensitive to short-term holiday timing, grew by 10% to 224,000 tonnes transported. Getlink emphasized that a more accurate picture of underlying demand will be visible when the combined results for March and April are analyzed together, as this will encompass the entire Easter travel period for both years. This monthly report underscores the operational and financial sensitivity of cross-Channel transport operators to seasonal patterns and calendar effects.
