📖 Full Retelling

Hong Kong's Court of Appeal on Thursday overturned the fraud conviction and sentencing of jailed pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai and another defendant in a case that has drawn international attention to the city's judicial system. Judges Jeremy Poon, Anthea Pang, and Derek Pang announced their decision in a press summary, stating they had allowed the appeal application and quashed the convictions while setting aside the sentences. The landmark ruling comes amid heightened scrutiny of Hong Kong's legal system following the national security law implementation. Lai, founder of now-defunct Apple Daily, had been serving a sentence of five years and nine months after being found guilty in December 2022 of breaching the lease terms of the newspaper's headquarters by concealing the operation of a private company, Dico Consultants Ltd, in the building. The case has been widely viewed by international observers as part of a broader crackdown on dissent and press freedom in Hong Kong.
