Hyundai to recall over 294,000 US vehicles over seat belt anchor defect

South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor America announced a major safety recall affecting over 294,000 of its vehicles in the United States on Tuesday, due to a defect in the front seat belt anchor pre-tensioners. The recall, which was initiated after internal testing revealed the potential for the component to rupture during a crash, covers specific models of the 2023-2024 Tucson and 2024 Santa Fe SUVs. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been notified of the voluntary action, which aims to address a critical safety flaw that could increase the risk of injury to front-seat occupants. The defect centers on the pyrotechnic charge within the seat belt anchor pre-tensioner, a device designed to tighten the seat belt instantly upon a collision. In the affected vehicles, this charge may be too powerful, causing the pre-tensioner's housing to rupture when deployed. Such a rupture could propel metal fragments into the cabin, posing a laceration hazard to the driver and front passenger. Furthermore, a compromised pre-tensioner could fail to properly restrain an occupant, diminishing the effectiveness of the seat belt system in a crash. Hyundai has stated that it is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities related to this specific defect. Owners of the involved vehicles will be notified by mail starting in late May 2024. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the front seat belt anchor pre-tensioner assemblies free of charge. Vehicle owners can also check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA or Hyundai recall websites to confirm if their SUV is part of the safety campaign. This recall underscores the ongoing challenges in automotive supply chains and component quality control, even as manufacturers implement advanced safety technologies.
