📖 Full Retelling
In North Carolina, Texas and Arkansas, incumbent House members from both parties faced intense primary challenges on March 3, 2026, as voters expressed dissatisfaction with current representation and the battle for control of Congress began to take shape, with redistricting forcing Democratic Reps. Al Green and Christian Menefee into a member-versus-member contest while other incumbents including Reps. Valerie Foushee, Tony Gonzales and Dan Crenshaw fought to maintain their seats against increasingly restless electorates. The competitive races reflect broader tensions within parties as progressive challengers take on established incumbents on issues ranging from Israel policy to artificial intelligence, with North Carolina's Democratic Rep. Valerie Foushee facing a rematch against Durham County Commissioner Nida Allam who has criticized Foushee's progressive credentials and ties to pro-Israel groups. In Texas, Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales' re-election bid has drawn national attention amid allegations of an affair with a former staffer who died by suicide, while polls closed between 8-9 PM ET across the state's vast congressional districts. These primaries will ultimately shape the battleground districts that will determine which party controls the House in the fall elections, with Republicans targeting Democratic incumbents in heavily Latino South Texas districts that swung toward President Trump in 2024, while Democrats seek candidates to challenge GOP Rep. Monica De La Cruz in a neighboring seat.

One incumbent is guaranteed to lose their seat in these states, since redistricting forced Texas Democratic Reps. Al Green and Christian Menefee into a member-versus-member primary that’s being fought on generational lines. But other incumbents are facing serious primary challenges too. In North Carolina, Democratic Rep. Valerie Foushee is fighting in a rematch of the 2022 primary that sent her to Congress, against Durham County Commissioner Nida Allam. Polls closed there earlier Tuesday, but results won't be reported until after 8:30 p.m. ET due to a precinct elsewhere in the state where voting hours were extended. Allam has tried to cast Foushee as not progressive enough on issues including Israel and the role of artificial intelligence, and Allam’s allies have blanketed the airwaves with attacks on Foushee’s past support from pro-Israel groups, arguing that she’s in the pocket of special interests and big business. Foushee has pushed back, framing herself as a productive progressive with the experience and seniority needed to push back against the Trump administration. She has cast the attacks over outside money as hollow given Allam’s backing from outside groups, too. While much of the national attention is foc...
