Ukraine’s Sports Minister, Matviy Bidnyi, issued a blistering critique of FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Friday, following the football governing body's suggestion that it may soon re-evaluate the ongoing international competition ban against Russian national teams. The controversy erupted after Infantino indicated in recent remarks that FIFA would look at lifting the sanctions, which were originally imposed in early 2022 following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces. Bidnyi characterized the FIFA president's stance as both "irresponsible" and "infantile," arguing that the geopolitical situation remains too volatile to allow Russia’s return to the world stage. The friction highlights the deepening divide between international sporting bodies and the Ukrainian government regarding the reintegration of Russian athletes.
