Self-taught artist Joe Macken celebrated the official museum debut of his colossal balsa wood replica of New York City at the Queens Museum this month, marking the culmination of a twenty-year labor of love that began in 2004. Macken meticulously hand-carved nearly one million individual structures to recreate the urban landscape of all five boroughs as a way to preserve the city’s architectural history and demonstrate the power of obsessive dedication. The exhibit offers a rare look at one of the most comprehensive scale models ever produced by a single individual, transforming a private passion project into a public landmark of folk art. The project, which includes every stadium, bridge, and residential building across the city, was born from Macken's desire to capture New York in its entirety. Using balsa wood for its lightweight and malleable properties, he spent two decades working piece by piece to replicate the dense topography of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Every famous skyscraper is represented, but so are the thousands of nondescript tenements and warehouses that define the city's character, resulting in a staggering level of detail that covers nearly one million distinct units. While the Queens Museum is already famous for housing the 'Panorama of the City of New York'—a massive scale model commissioned for the 1964 World's Fair—Macken’s work offers a different perspective. His version is a testament to individual endurance and the intimate relationship between a resident and his environment. Visitors and historians alike have noted that while professional models are often clinical, Macken’s balsa wood creation carries a tactile, human quality that reflects two decades of lived experience and observation during the city’s evolution in the 21st century.
