Mastodon is about to launch its take on Bluesky’s starter packs

The decentralized social network platform Mastodon announced on Thursday that it will launch a new feature called "Collections" in the coming weeks, a tool designed to help users discover and share curated lists of up to 25 accounts, directly inspired by a similar feature on the rival platform Bluesky. This move represents a strategic effort to improve user onboarding and content discovery within Mastodon's federated server network, which has historically faced criticism for being less intuitive for new users compared to centralized social media. The new Collections feature, which was previously referred to as "Packs" in earlier announcements last year, will allow users on participating servers to create lists with a short description and topic. A notable inclusion is the option to mark a Collection as "sensitive," which will hide the list's description and the accounts within it behind a content warning. This functionality addresses community moderation concerns that are central to Mastodon's ethos, giving server administrators and users control over the visibility of potentially sensitive content. This development is part of an ongoing feature war within the burgeoning decentralized social web, often referred to as the "fediverse." Bluesky's "Starter Packs," which allow users to easily share bundles of accounts, have been praised for simplifying the discovery process. By implementing its own version, Mastodon aims to lower the barrier to entry on its platform, where finding interesting people and communities across thousands of independent servers can be daunting. The rollout signifies Mastodon's commitment to evolving its user experience while maintaining its core decentralized principles, as it competes for users migrating from traditional platforms like X (formerly Twitter).
