📖 Full Retelling

US President Trump launched major combat operations against Iran on Saturday, February 28, 2026, with air strikes hitting Tehran and other Iranian cities, prompting panicked residents to flee and children to flee classrooms as communications were cut across the country. The Iranian government reported that one missile struck a girl's elementary school in Minab city in Iran's southern Hormozgan province, killing at least 40 students. Residents described scenes of chaos as people rushed to shelter while fighter jets and missiles exploded around them, with no prior warning from authorities despite the attack occurring on the first day of Iran's work week when many were at work or in school. Iran responded swiftly by launching strikes against Israel and US bases in the Gulf, declaring all US and Israeli interests and assets in the region as legitimate targets following what it described as attacks on both defense infrastructure and civilian sites. The Bahraini government confirmed an Iranian airstrike had hit the US naval base in Bahrain home to the US Fifth Fleet, while the United Arab Emirates reported intercepting Iranian missiles, with shrapnel from one intercepted missile killing a national of an unspecified Asian country in Abu Dhabi. Amid the escalating conflict, Iran's foreign ministry noted Tehran had been in the middle of diplomatic negotiations with the US aimed at preventing war when it was struck and called for an immediate UN Security Council meeting. Meanwhile, some Iranian citizens expressed mixed reactions, with some protesters hoping the strikes could lead to the fall of the regime while others feared the violence would only strengthen the government's grip on power.

It declared that following the airstrikes in Iran early Saturday, it considered all U.S. and Israeli interests and assets in the region legitimate targets. "Our country's armed forces will teach America and Israel a big lesson," said Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi, spokesman for the military general staff. The Bahraini government said an Iranian airstrike had hit the U.S. naval base in Bahrain which is home to the U.S. Fifth Fleet.
