Deep Analysis

Why It Matters

This partnership matters because it represents a significant step toward commercializing autonomous delivery technology, which could transform last-mile logistics and reduce delivery costs. It affects DoorDash customers who may see faster, potentially cheaper deliveries; gig economy workers whose jobs could be impacted by automation; and urban residents who might encounter more autonomous vehicles on streets. The collaboration also signals growing confidence in autonomous vehicle technology for specific commercial applications beyond passenger transport.

Context & Background

  • Rivian is an electric vehicle manufacturer known for its R1T pickup and R1S SUV, with backing from Amazon and a focus on adventure vehicles
  • DoorDash is a leading food delivery platform that has been expanding into grocery, retail, and convenience delivery beyond restaurant meals
  • The autonomous vehicle industry has shifted focus from robotaxis to more predictable commercial applications like delivery and logistics
  • Last-mile delivery costs represent 53% of total shipping costs according to some industry estimates, creating strong incentive for automation

What Happens Next

Also will likely begin pilot testing autonomous delivery vehicles in select markets within 12-18 months, starting with controlled environments before expanding. DoorDash may announce specific cities for initial deployment by early 2025, with regulatory approval being a key milestone. The partnership will face scrutiny regarding safety protocols, employment impacts on delivery drivers, and integration with existing DoorDash operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Also and how is it related to Rivian?

Also is a new company spun off from Rivian, focusing specifically on autonomous vehicle technology. While leveraging Rivian's electric vehicle expertise, Also operates independently to develop self-driving delivery solutions.

How will autonomous delivery vehicles affect DoorDash drivers?

Initially, autonomous vehicles will likely complement human drivers during peak times or in specific areas. Long-term, they could reduce demand for human delivery drivers, though DoorDash will need to manage this transition carefully to avoid backlash.

When can customers expect to receive deliveries from autonomous vehicles?

Limited pilot programs might begin in select cities within 1-2 years, but widespread deployment will take longer due to regulatory hurdles, safety testing, and technological refinement needed for diverse urban environments.

What advantages do autonomous delivery vehicles offer over human drivers?

They can operate 24/7 without breaks, potentially reduce delivery costs over time, and eliminate human error in navigation. However, they face challenges with complex delivery scenarios like apartment buildings or inclement weather.

How will these vehicles handle the 'last 50 feet' of delivery?

This remains a key technical challenge. Solutions may include secure lockers, limited autonomous navigation to doorsteps, or hybrid approaches where humans handle final placement while vehicles manage transportation between locations.

Micromobility company Also, which was created inside Rivian and spun out last year , will work with DoorDash to develop autonomous delivery vehicles, the companies announced Tuesday. As part of the deal, DoorDash took part in Also’s $200 million Series C funding round, which was led by previous investor Greenoaks Capital . DoorDash is getting a seat on Also’s board of directors, too. The raise brings Also’s total funding to $505 million, and puts its valuation above $1 billion. The startup got off the ground with a $105 million investment from Eclipse , which is also backing Mind Robotics — an external industrial AI company that Rivian created late last year . Also began as a skunkworks project inside Rivian in 2022 . The EV-maker initially set out to build an electric bike, and even collaborated with Jony Ive’s design firm LoveFrom, as TechCrunch first reported last year . Also’s first product is a high-end, funky-looking e-bike , but it has also shown off designs for small, pedal-assist delivery vehicles. Amazon — which is a major investor in, and partner with Rivian — placed an order for thousands of these delivery vehicles late last year. Also has said these can carry more than 400 pounds of packages while still being small enough to fit in a bike lane. The DoorDash deal is the first indication that Also will be developing autonomous versions of its small electric vehicles. Rivian founder RJ Scaringe and Also CEO Chris Yu told TechCrunch last year that almost any form factor was on the table — within practical limits. Rivian and Also have said that the micromobility startup would leverage the automaker’s tech in its products, as well as its retail presence and economies of scale. It’s not clear if Also will leverage the autonomy tech that Rivian has been working on. Techcrunch event Disrupt 2026: The tech ecosystem, all in one room Your next round. Your next hire.
