  • The U.S. sanctioned 15 entities, 2 individuals, and 14 vessels involved in Iran's shadow fleet.
  • The sanctions aim to stop the illicit export of Iranian petroleum and petrochemical products.
  • Revenues from these trades are allegedly used to fund terrorism and domestic repression.
  • The action was taken under Executive Order 13846 as part of a 'maximum pressure' strategy.

📖 Full Retelling

The U.S. Department of State, represented by Principal Deputy Spokesperson Thomas Pigott, announced a sweeping set of sanctions against 15 entities, two individuals, and 14 shadow fleet vessels in Washington on February 6, 2026, aimed at dismantling the illicit trade of Iranian petroleum and petrochemical products. This decisive action was taken to disrupt the Iranian regime's primary revenue streams, which the United States maintains are used to fund international destabilization, regional proxy groups, and domestic repression. By targeting the 'shadow fleet'—a network of aging tankers used to bypass global trade monitoring—the administration aims to restrict the financial oxygen used by Tehran to sustain its malign influence. According to the official press statement, the Iranian regime has prioritized the funding of terrorist activities and the expansion of its military capabilities over the welfare of its citizens and the maintenance of domestic infrastructure. The Department of State emphasized that the revenue generated from these illegal oil sales directly facilitates the regime’s ability to conduct oppressive operations both at home and abroad. The U.S. government signaled that it will continue to monitor and penalize any partners or intermediaries who assist the Islamic Republic in evading international trade restrictions. These newest designations were issued under Executive Order 13846, which provides the legal framework for re-imposing sanctions on the Iranian energy sector. The move aligns with a broader 'maximum pressure campaign' designed to maximize the economic cost of Iran's non-compliance with international norms. By blacklisting these specific vessels and organizations, the U.S. Treasury and State Departments are working in tandem to increase the transparency of global maritime commerce and deter third-party engagement with sanctioned Iranian assets.

Remember when the only thing shady at sea was pirates? Now it’s just Iran and their floating oil rigs. #PirateProblems

Nothing says ‘we mean business’ like sanctioning 14 vessels. I’d hate to be the last ship on that list wondering when my number’s up! 🚢💨 #ShadowFleetDrama

💬 Character Dialogue

malenia: In the grand tapestry of fate, the shadow fleet is but a thread of deceit, woven by the hands of those who forsake honor.
ellie: Sanctions? Sounds like a fancy term for 'We’ve run out of patience with shady oil dealers!' Honestly, who thought trading in old tankers was still a thing?
malenia: The Iranian regime, much like a withering rose, prioritizes decay over growth, yet it still clings to shadows as if they could provide sustenance.
ellie: Right? They’re squeezing pennies from a dying industry while the rest of us are just trying to stay afloat! It's like watching a sinking ship load more junk!
malenia: A ruler who nurtures unrest rather than prosperity is a coward hiding behind walls of deceit; thus, they shall face their judgement.

Thomas "Tommy" Pigott, Principal Deputy Spokesperson Sanctions to Combat Illicit Traders of Iranian Oil and the Shadow Fleet Press Statement February 6, 2026 The Department of State is sanctioning 15 entities, two individuals, and 14 shadow fleet vessels connected to the illicit trade in Iranian petroleum, petroleum products, and petrochemical products. These targets have generated revenue that the regime uses to conduct its malign activities. Instead of investing in the welfare of its own people and crumbling infrastructure, the Iranian regime continues to fund destabilizing activities around the world and step up its repression inside Iran. So long as Iranian regime attempts to evade sanctions and generate oil and petrochemical revenues to fund such oppressive behavior and support terrorist activities and proxies, the United States will act to hold both the Iranian regime and its partners accountable. The President is committed to driving down the Iranian regime’s illicit oil and petrochemical exports under the Administration’s maximum pressure campaign. All Department of State targets are being designated pursuant to Executive Order (E.O.) 13846, which authorizes and reimposes certain sanctions with respect to Iran, and in furtherance of President Trump’s National Security Presidential Memorandum 2 .
