Volkswagen drops all-electric ID.4 in the US in pivot back to gas SUVs

German automaker Volkswagen has discontinued production of its all-electric ID.4 SUV for the United States market, announcing the decision from its Chattanooga, Tennessee factory in late 2024. This strategic move represents a significant pivot back toward gasoline-powered vehicles, as the company reallocates all manufacturing resources at the facility to focus exclusively on the upcoming, next-generation Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs. The decision is driven by slower-than-anticipated EV adoption rates in the U.S. and a need to prioritize higher-margin, high-demand products in a competitive market. The ID.4, which was Volkswagen's flagship electric vehicle for the American market and the first EV built at the Chattanooga plant, will no longer be assembled locally. Instead, the company will import a limited number of ID.4 units from its factory in Germany to fulfill remaining orders, effectively ending its U.S. production run after just a few years.
