YouTube Premium and YouTube Music are getting more expensive

Google's YouTube announced on July 16, 2024, that it is implementing a price increase for its YouTube Premium and YouTube Music subscription services in the United States, citing the need to continue investing in and improving the platform's features and content offerings for users. The change marks the second price adjustment for these services in just over two years, reflecting broader industry trends toward higher subscription costs for streaming and ad-free digital content. The individual plan for YouTube Premium, which includes ad-free viewing, background playback, and access to YouTube Music, will rise from $13.99 to $15.99 per month, representing a 14% increase. Simultaneously, the family plan, which allows up to six household members to share the benefits, will increase from $22.99 to $26.99 per month, a 17% hike. The student plan will also see an increase from $7.99 to $9.99 monthly. These new prices will take effect for new subscribers immediately and will be applied to existing members on their next billing cycle after the announcement date. This move by YouTube follows similar price increases by competitors in the streaming and music subscription space, such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Netflix, as companies seek to boost revenue and offset rising content acquisition and operational costs. The company emphasized that the additional revenue will support ongoing investments in creator tools, new features like enhanced podcasts and AI-powered recommendations, and the expansion of YouTube Music's catalog.
