# Charles III **Charles III** (Charles Philip Arthur George; born 14 November 1948) is King of the United Kingdom and the 14 other Commonwealth realms. He acceded to the throne on 8 September 2022, following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. ### Early Life and Education Charles was born at Buckingham Palace during the reign of his maternal grandfather, King George VI. He became the heir apparent at the age of three when his mother ascended to the throne in 1952. As the eldest son of the monarch, he automatically assumed the titles of Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland. ### Prince of Wales In 1958, Charles was created **Prince of Wales** and Earl of Chester by his mother. His formal investiture took place on 1 July 1969 at Caernarfon Castle. He held the title of Prince of Wales for over 64 years, making him the longest-serving heir apparent and Prince of Wales in British history. ### Accession and Reign Upon the death of Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September 2022, Charles immediately became King. His coronation took place at Westminster Abbey on 6 May 2023. As monarch, he serves as the Head of the Commonwealth and the Supreme Governor of the Church of England.
