📖 Key Information
The Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran (Persian: نظام جمهوری اسلامی ایران, romanized: Nezâm-e Jomhuri-ye Eslâmi-ye Irân) is the name of the current government of Iran, which, according to the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, is founded on the principles of republicanism and Islamism. It is described as an anti-imperialist system, opposed to democracy and secularism, and, in its own way, as a totalitarian and authoritarian system with an orientation toward the doctrine of the “Absolute Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist” (Velayat-e Motlaq-e Faqih).
Following the 1979 Revolution, the Islamic Republic of Iran was formally established through a referendum held on 30 and 31 March 1979, in which the question “Islamic Republic, yes or no?” was put to voters, and 98.2 percent voted in favor.
