Background & History
Nuuk was founded as Godthåb in 1728 by Danish businessman Jacob Ragnarussen. The city's strategic location on a fjord made it an important trading post. Over time, it grew to become the political and administrative center of the colony. It officially became the capital of the Kingdom of Denmark in 1979 when Greenland gained home rule.
