The Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) is an armed ethnic Hutu rebel group operating in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It opposes ethnic Tutsi influence and represents one of the last remaining factions of Rwandan rebels active in the Congo.
Background & History
The FDLR was founded in September 2000 through the amalgamation of various Rwandan refugee groups, notably including the former Army for the Liberation of Rwanda (ALiR). It emerged as a continuation of Hutu extremist forces following the Rwandan genocide. The group was established under the leadership of Paul Rwarakabije.
