Gorillaz is a British virtual band created in London in 1998 by musician Damon Albarn and comic book artist Jamie Hewlett. Albarn provides musical composition and instrumental performance, Hewlett provides artwork. The band primarily consists of four fictional members: 2-D (vocals, keyboards, melodica), Murdoc Niccals (bass guitar), Noodle (guitar, keyboards, backup vocals) and Russel Hobbs (drums). Their universe is presented in media such as music videos, interviews, comic strips and short cartoons.
Gorillaz are known for their eclectic music, which spans alternative rock, trip hop, electronica, dub, reggae and hip hop. The band has released nine studio albums, several EPs and singles. They have won numerous awards, including a Grammy Award, two BRIT Awards and a MTV Video Music Award. Gorillaz are one of the most successful virtual bands of all time, having sold over 30 million records worldwide.
