Who / What
Rebecca Michelle Sherrill, often referred to as Mikie Sherrill or Michelle Sherrill, is an American politician and lawyer who has been serving as the 57th Governor of New Jersey since January 2026. She represents a Democratic Party administration in New Jersey.
Background & History
Born on January 19, 1972, in Metuchen, Middlesex County, New Jersey, Sherrill's political career is deeply rooted in the state she leads. Before entering politics full-time, she served as a naval officer from 1994 to 2006 and later worked as a federal prosecutor for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Newark until joining the General Assembly. Elected to the New Jersey General Assembly in 2013, Sherrill held various roles before being chosen as Governor by Democrats following the death of former Republican Governor Chris Christie in December 2024. She was subsequently elected governor in November 2025 and officially assumed office on January 1, 2026.
Why Notable
Mikie Sherrill's election is significant due to several reasons: she is New Jersey's second female Governor since Christine Todd Whitman (former Republican Governor), the first Democratic woman elected Governor in modern history for an historically Republican stronghold state, and notably became the first confirmed female military veteran governor of any US state when her service record was verified upon taking office.
In the News
Following President Joe Biden's approval in February 2026 to formally nominate her as Governor after her election victory in November 2025, Sherrill began serving as the acting Governor under New Jersey's constitutional succession rules. Her formal gubernatorial administration commenced with full responsibilities on January 17, 2026.
