Who / What
Mikola Viktaravich Statkevich is a Belarusian lieutenant colonel, politician, and pro‑democracy activist. He is best known as a leading opposition figure and presidential candidate in the 2010 Belarusian presidential election.
Background & History
Statkevich was born on 12 August 1956 and rose through military ranks to lieutenant colonel. He became a prominent opposition leader opposing the authoritarian rule in Belarus, running as an independent candidate in 2010. In 2020, at the age of 63, he was arrested and has been held in prison by Belarusian authorities since 31 May 2020. Human rights groups, including Viasna Human Rights Centre, have classified him as a political prisoner.
Why Notable
Statkevich’s candidacy in 2010 represented a rare challenge to the entrenched regime of Alexander Lukashenko, drawing international attention to Belarus’s electoral process. His continued imprisonment has made him a symbol of the state’s crackdown on dissent and a focal point for international human‑rights advocacy. His public opposition activities have inspired a broader resistance movement within Belarus.
In the News
As of 2024, Statkevich remains incarcerated, and his case continues to be cited by foreign governments and NGOs advocating for democratic reforms in Belarus. The Ukrainian war of 2022–23 and the Russian–Ukrainian conflict have shifted international attention toward European security, but Belarus’s repression of opposition figures—highlighted by Statkevich’s imprisonment—remains a pressing issue for European policymakers.
