Originally planned to be one of two NHL expansion teams in 1998 alongside Detroit but delayed until later that year; established in the same year by Phoenix Coyotes management and ownership group led by Robert P. Wieskopf, acquiring most players from the Colorado Avalanche. The team began play at the newly built Bridgestone Arena (formerly known as the Nashville Arena) during the 1998-99 season.
