💡 Information Card

Who / What

Running is a method of terrestrial locomotion enabling rapid movement on foot for humans and animals. It is distinguished from walking by having an aerial phase where all feet are off the ground. This gait allows for quicker travel speeds through a biomechanical pattern different from walking.

Background & History

As a fundamental form of human mobility, running predates recorded history, evolving as an essential survival skill for hunting and evasion. The distinction between running and walking gaits was formally described through biomechanical studies in the 19th and 20th centuries. Running has been central to human athletic competitions since ancient times, most notably in the original Olympic Games.

Why Notable

Running holds significance as one of humanity's most fundamental physical capabilities and oldest athletic competitions. It plays a crucial role in fitness, sports, and transportation worldwide. The activity has substantial health benefits and forms the basis for numerous organized sports from sprinting to marathon running.

In the News

Running remains highly relevant with ongoing research into biomechanics and performance enhancement. Recent developments include advanced shoe technology and training methodologies improving athletic records. The activity continues to gain attention for its accessibility and health benefits in combating sedentary lifestyles.

    📖 Key Information

Running is a method of terrestrial locomotion by which humans and other animals move quickly on foot. Running is a gait with an aerial phase in which all feet are above the ground (though there are exceptions). This is in contrast to walking, a slower form of movement where at least one foot is always in contact with the ground, the legs are kept mostly straight, and the center of gravity vaults over the stance leg or legs in an inverted pendulum fashion.
