California Man Sentenced to 4 Years for Covert Work on China’s Behalf

A federal judge in Los Angeles sentenced California resident Mike Sun to four years in prison on Tuesday for acting as an unregistered foreign agent of the People’s Republic of China. Sun was convicted of carrying out a series of covert influence operations between 2019 and 2023 at the behest of Chinese government officials, aimed at advancing Beijing's interests and monitoring its political rivals within the United States. The prosecution argued that Sun’s activities represented a calculated effort to interfere in domestic political processes and suppress dissenting voices on behalf of a foreign power. According to court documents released by the Department of Justice, Sun’s clandestine work involved a multifaceted approach to political surveillance and influence. One of his primary assignments included monitoring the visit of Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen to California, where he reportedly gathered intelligence on her itinerary and those meeting with her. This information was subsequently transmitted to Chinese intelligence or government contacts, highlighting Beijing's persistent efforts to track high-level diplomatic movements by Taiwanese officials on American soil. In addition to his surveillance activities, Sun engaged in local political interference by actively supporting and financing the election campaign of a specific city council member. Investigators found that this support was part of a broader strategy to cultivate sympathetic voices within local American governance. Throughout his partnership with Chinese officials, Sun failed to register as a foreign agent under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), a legal requirement designed to ensure transparency regarding foreign influence in U.S. politics. Legal experts note that this sentencing is part of a wider crackdown by federal authorities on 'transnational repression' and illegal foreign lobbying. The four-year prison term serves as a significant deterrent for individuals attempting to utilize the freedoms of the American democratic system to undermine it on behalf of adversarial regimes.
