Hungary blocks Russia sanctions, EU cash for Kyiv on eve of Ukraine war anniversary

Hungary maintained its veto on Monday against new European Union sanctions on Russia and a €90 billion loan package for Ukraine in Brussels, citing a critical dispute over the halted Druzhba oil pipeline as the bloc marked the eve of the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion. The decision by Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government effectively stalled the financial aid and punitive measures aimed at Moscow, escalating internal EU tensions just as Kyiv seeks renewed support to sustain its war effort. The diplomatic deadlock centers on the Soviet-era Druzhba pipeline, the primary artery for Russian oil flowing through Ukraine to refineries in Hungary and Slovakia.
