Man sentenced to life in prison for 2024 attempt on Trump's life

Ryan Routh, a 59-year-old man, was sentenced to life in prison for his attempt to assassinate former President Donald Trump at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, in September 2024. Routh, who was found guilty last year, was acting as a lone assailant when he attempted to kill Trump, who was then a presidential candidate. The incident occurred when a US Secret Service agent noticed a rifle barrel protruding from the bushes and fired at Routh, who subsequently fled the scene and was arrested nearby. Judge Aileen Cannon emphasized that Routh's actions warranted a life sentence due to his meticulous planning over months, his willingness to kill anyone in his path, and his lack of remorse. Routh's defense team, led by Martin Ross, announced plans to appeal the verdict. Throughout the trial, Routh exhibited erratic behavior, including challenging Trump to a game of golf and making references to historical figures like Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Putin. After the jury's guilty verdict, Routh attempted to stab himself in the neck with a pen before being escorted out of the courtroom by US marshals. Investigators recovered a semiautomatic rifle with a scope and an extended magazine from the location where Routh had been hiding, along with a list of potential Trump appearances and a note describing the incident as an assassination attempt. The trial highlighted Routh's erratic behavior, as he spoke about unrelated topics during his closing statement, prompting the judge to interrupt and dismiss the jury multiple times. The lead prosecutor, John Shipley, asserted that the evidence presented clearly demonstrated how close Routh came to successfully carrying out the assassination. This incident marked the second attempt on Trump's life in 2024, following a shooting at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July, which resulted in one fatality and several injuries, including to Trump. The shooter in that incident, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, was killed by officers at the scene.
