Ryan Coogler’s vampire drama “Sinners” enters the night with a record-breaking 16 nominations, the most of any film in Oscars history. It will face tough competition from fellow Warner Bros. release “One Battle After Another,” Paul Thomas Anderson’s dark political thriller which earned 13 nods. The two films have racked up wins throughout the precursors from this year’s awards season, and they’re up against “Frankenstein,” “Bugonia,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” “Sentimental Value,” “Train Dreams,” “F1” and “The Secret Agent” for best picture. “Sinners” has gained momentum after winning the top prize at this month’s SAG’s Actor Awards, which also featured Michael B. Jordan winning for lead actor over frontrunner Timothee Chalamet for the ping-pong drama “Marty Supreme.” It’ll be a tight race between the two actors, plus Leonardo DiCaprio (“One Battle After Another”), Ethan Hawke (“Blue Moon”) and Wagner Moura (“The Secret Agent”). In lead actress, “Hamnet” star Jessie Buckley has led for most of awards season, and she’s up against Emma Stone (“Bugonia”), Kate Hudson (“Song Sung Blue”), Rose Byrne (“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You”) and Renate Reinsve (“Sentimental Value”).
