The Iranian Revolution That Wasn’t

Ayatollah Khomeini executed a strategic bait-and-switch in the early years of post-revolutionary Iran, transforming popular democratic aspirations into an Islamic theocracy that would alienate many Iranians who had initially supported the revolution, despite widespread international support and Western perceptions of him as a democratic reformer. The revolution of 1979 initially promised democratic governance and greater freedoms for Iranians, who had grown weary under the Shah's authoritarian rule.
