The company has applied to amend its investment plan for its second Japanese factory, and now plans to produce 3-nm chips at a rate of 15,000 12-inch wafers per month. TSMC had earlier signaled that it will produce advanced 3-nm chips at its second Japanese foundry. The company had in 2021 established a unit in the Japanese prefecture of Kumamoto, with the second unit also expected to be located in the same area. The company is the world’s largest contract chipmaker, and is racing to shore up its production capacity amid outsized demand from the artificial intelligence industry. While its main production hubs are located in Taiwan, it has overseas foundries in the U.S. and Japan, and plans to expand production at both sites.
