Who / What

The **Storm Shadow** is a Franco-British low-observable, long-range air-launched cruise missile designed for precision strikes on strategic and military targets. Developed since 1994 by Matra (now part of MBDA) in collaboration with British Aerospace, it serves as both the British name and a common designation for its dual-national variant.

---

Background & History

The Storm Shadow originated from Franco-British cooperation to enhance cruise missile technology. Initially developed based on the French **Apache anti-runway missile**, it was refined to eliminate cluster munitions in favor of a unitary warhead, improving lethality and reliability. In response to France’s 2006 defense requirements for a naval-capable cruise missile (MdCN), MBDA France expanded development, culminating in successful test firings in July 2013.

---

Why Notable

The Storm Shadow is a cornerstone of modern airpower, enabling deep-strike operations with unmatched precision and range. Its dual-national production ensures interoperability between French and British armed forces while addressing evolving threats like armored targets and urban warfare. Widely deployed across NATO allies, it underscores the missile’s critical role in countering adversarial long-range capabilities.

In the News

As a key component of Franco-British defense alliances, the Storm Shadow remains relevant amid geopolitical tensions and rising global threats. Recent deployments highlight its integration into advanced fighter jets (e.g., Eurofighter Typhoon) and naval platforms, reinforcing its status as a versatile weapon system in contemporary warfare.

    📖 Key Information

The Storm Shadow is a Franco-British low-observable, long-range air-launched cruise missile developed since 1994 by Matra and British Aerospace, and now manufactured by MBDA. "Storm Shadow" is the weapon's British name; in France it is called SCALP-EG (which stands for "Système de Croisière Autonome à Longue Portée – Emploi Général"; English: "Long Range Autonomous Cruise Missile System – General Purpose"). The missile is based on the French-developed Apache anti-runway cruise missile, but differs in that it carries a unitary warhead instead of cluster munitions. To meet the requirement issued by the French Ministry of Defence for a more potent cruise missile capable of being launched from surface vessels and submarines, and able to strike strategic and military targets from extended standoff ranges with even greater precision, MBDA France began development of the Missile de Croisière Naval ("Naval Cruise Missile") or MdCN in 2006 to complement the SCALP. The first firing test took place in July 2013 and was successful.
