What Is a Fire Cloud and How Are They Making Europe's Wildfires More Dangerous?

Wildfires have burned large areas in France and Spain, forcing many people to leave their homes. In the Gironde region near Bordeaux, a rare weather event called a fire cloud, or pyrocumulonimbus, formed over the weekend. This is the first time such a fire cloud has been seen in France. The fire cloud makes the fires harder to control by creating strong winds and lightning.
