Jewish community in Denver on high alert over rise of democratic socialist Melat Kiros

In June, 29‑year‑old Melat Kiros, who calls herself a democratic socialist, won the Democratic primary against long‑time Representative Diana DeGette in Denver’s 1st Congressional District. Progressive groups celebrated her win as a major victory. However, Jewish leaders in Denver say they feel unsafe because of Kiros’s statements. They point to her comment that the Oct. 7 attacks were “inevitable” and her refusal to call a local firebombing antisemitic.
