<p>As the Sun-Times' Frank Main <a class="Link" href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/the-watchdogs/2026/08/04/arne-duncan-education-secretary-gun-violence-cred-chicago-police-cpd" >reported</a>, Nakia Smith, a convicted felon who is not lawfully permitted to possess a firearm, entered a police station in possession of a gun, ostensibly to turn in the gun to authorities. That he had no other purpose in doing this must be acknowledged by all.</p><p>Can't the Cook County state's attorney and criminal justice system sometimes exercise some common sense and temper justice with some mercy?</p><p>And, no, I am not one of those lakefront liberals.</p><p><i>Julius L.
